It took the creative genius of a Cape Town couple to see the potential of an enormous agricultural barn which stood unused in a quiet Prince Albert street for years. And another three years to transform the vast shed into a double-storey home of breathtaking proportions, with light-filled double volume interiors which include a chic design studio, huge workshop and a smart additional apartment with private entrance. Combining the talents of an interior designer with a master woodworking craftsman, the barn is now a property of unique distinction by any international standards, with the total area under roof a staggering 900m2.

The entrance is via a freestanding staircase in the soaring entrance hall, leading to the main living areas upstairs. The bespoke kitchen occupies the north wall, with two seating areas and dining area on the east and west walls. A deck leads from the living area, taking in uninterrupted Karoo vistas of plains and mountain. On the same level are three elegant bedrooms ensuite with freestanding tubs and glazed showers as well as a guest cloakroom. All have beautiful views.

On the upper level too, is the guest apartment, which has a discreetly concealed interior entrance from the living/dining area, as well as a private entrance via an external staircase from the garden. The two-roomed apartment has an open plan kitchen and living area with deck, as well as one bedroom ensuite. All bedrooms have ample built-in cupboards and the master suite has a generous dressing area with additional shelves and hanging space.

Throughout the house, the floors are of wooden boards, finished by the owner – who also made all the cupboards and other wooden items in the house. Enter the vast ground floor workshop and it becomes clear that this is a highly professional operation, with results that speak for themselves.

Also on the ground floor is a professional design studio and office with access both from the house and via double doors leading to the garden. The studio has a compact kitchen and cloakroom, as well as access to a large laundry and store room. There are also two garages and an undercover parking bay.

The auto-irrigated garden, with small lap-pool, has been fully landscaped with an uncluttered design of symmetrically placed wooden planter boxes around a grid of lavender-lined pathways. Planting is well established and focuses on hardy, water-wise choices as well as olive trees for accents.
